Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels, including coronary heart disease, stroke and disease of the arteries. It often develops when fatty deposits build up in the arteries, reducing blood flow. CVD increases the risk of experiencing serious cardiovascular events such as a heart attack or stroke.
Treatment depends on the condition and the person’s overall risk. It may include lifestyle changes such as healthy eating, exercise and weight management and stopping smoking. Medicines may also be prescribed to manage related conditions. Some people may also need a procedure or surgery.
