Are you overweight or overweight with Type 2 Diabetes? Diet & exercise not working?
You might be able to join a clinical trial to help develop a potential weight loss treatment for people who are overweight or overweight with Type 2 Diabetes.
Eligible participants will continue their current diabetes medications throughout the study, and will receive:
- Diet, activity and lifestyle support
- Regular health check-ins and study-related medical care
- All participants are reimbursed for their time and travel

51 visits over 58 weeks (no overnight stays)

Eligibility Criteria
A)
- Are aged 18–75
- Have type 2 diabetes (HbA1c between 53 and 91)
- Are overweight or obese (BMI 25+)
- Are on diet/exercise alone, or taking metformin and/or SGLT2
- Have had at least one unsuccessful weight loss attempt
- Are currently on stable diabetes treatment or lifestyle changes
- Other study inclusion and exclusion criteria may also apply
B)
- Are aged 18–75
- Are overweight or obese (BMI 25+) and weigh less than 159 kg
- Have had at least one unsuccessful weight loss attempt
- Are otherwise in good general health
- Can remain on a stable diet and exercise routine throughout the study
Locations
Description
Around 1 in 3 Kiwis are considered clinically obese, according to the NZ Health Survey 2020/2021. Obesity is a complex, long-term condition linked to factors like genetics, hormones, and environment - not just lifestyle. It increases the risk of serious health issues like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and sleep apnoea, and can also affect mental wellbeing. That’s why researchers are working to find new treatment options to support healthy weight management. This study is testing a potential new treatment that is expected to work by activating a signal in the body that may potentially support healthy weight and sugar levels, without some of the side effects seen in other treatments.
Study duration: About 51 clinic visits over 58 weeks (NO overnight stays)
What to expect
- You may receive either the investigational medication or a placebo
- Your personal info will be kept private
- There’s free parking and flexible appointments
- Medsafe and HDEC approval is required to run studies in New Zealand
