Description

Shingles is a viral infection caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. When this virus becomes active again, it travels along nerve pathways and leads to shingles, which appears as painful, fluid-filled blisters. These blisters usually form in a band or strip on one side of the face or body. The pain from shingles is often described as burning, throbbing, or stabbing, and for some people, it can last for weeks or even months after the blisters heal.

Oral antiviral medication can treat shingles, but delays in accessing it within 72 hours of symptom onset may prevent effective treatment.

What to expect

Momentum Clinical Research is studying a potential topical treatment for shingles that is designed to help stop the virus from spreading, reduce pain, and aid rash healing.

The study treatment is a foam that you apply directly to your shingles rash twice a day, in the morning and at night, for 10 days in a row.

This study is "double-blinded," which means that neither you nor the study doctor will know if you are getting the actual study medicine or a placebo. A placebo looks like the study medicine but doesn’t have any active ingredients. Placebos are used to help researchers see how well the study medicine works and how safe it is. If you join the study, you will have a 2 in 3 chance of receiving the study medicine.
